* ARE MI-KIS AN OVERALL HEALTHY BREED?
Yes,
Mi-Kis are healthy with no known hereditary life-threatening
defects. In general, Mi-Kis are a very hearty little breed.
However, as with any toy breed, you do need to watch for patella
problems. Patellas are kneecaps. This is not a life-threatening
defect or disease, but can be painful in the later years of life for a
little dog if the amount of luxation in the patellas becomes
severe. For more information on Patellas, please visit the
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals at www.offa.org.
Majestic
Mi-Kis routinely screens their breeding adults for patellar luxation
issues to ensure that we are only produce top of the line Mi-Ki Puppies!
* WHAT IS CERF AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
CERF
stands for the Canine Eye Registry Foundation. This
foundation was formed to help eliminate eye disease in all
purebred dogs. So far, the Mi-Ki breed has had a few isolated
cases of Distichiasis (or eyelashes that turn inward). Should
this occur, they can be removed by a veterinarian and should not
pose any serious threat to the health of your Mi-Ki. It is
possible to eliminate the chance of receiving a puppy with this
potential inconvenience by adopting a puppy from a breeder who does
regular CERF testing. This will ensure that the Mi-Kis being used
in that particular breeding program are free of any eye
disorders. Majestic Mi-Kis regularly CERFs our breedable
Mi-Ki dogs to ensure just that. To learn more about the CERF
organization and what they do, please visit their web site at: www.vmdb.org
* WHAT CAN I EXPECT AS FAR AS MAINTENANCE IS CONCERNED?
* You can expect to have to follow a reasonable vaccination schedule.
*
You can expect to have to brush your Mi-Ki regularly and/or schedule
regular grooming appointments. (This is especially true for long
coat Mi-Kis.) Also regular nail trimming is required.
*
You can expect to have to schedule at least one professional
veterinarian teeth cleaning per year along with regular home dental
care. Being a toy breed, the Mi-Ki is prone to the possibility of
accelerated tooth decay.
*
You can expect to have to put some initial time into training our Mi-Ki
Puppy to function on a time frame that is fitting to your families
schedule. This may take some time, but with consistent training
and positive reward, your Mi-Ki will catch on fast!
* You can expect a lot of laughs, fun times, and close companionship for many many years with your Mi-Ki Puppy!
Providing you do these and other veterinarian recommended regimens, you can expect a long healthy life with your Mi-Ki.
